Now it’s time to get married! But how exactly do you know marriage registration in Malaysia – legally?
The marriage registration procedures might be confusing and scary to some, because of the whole legal element. But don’t worry, here are the complete legal steps of marriage registration procedures in Malaysia for both Malaysians and non-Malaysians to guide you through the maze.
FOR MALAYSIANS
The counter will close at 11am! So, wake up as early as you can to avoid rescheduling your marriage and the queue!
What to prepare:
- Completed official National Registration Department (NRD) document: JPN KC02 (*online version served only as a reference)
- Your ICs (both the original and photocopied versions)
- Your witnesses’ ICs (photocopied version)
- One (1) 32mm x 38mm coloured passport-size photographs with blue background per applicant (Make 2 copies just in case)
Note: Refer to the checklist for marriage registration provided by the NRD if you have any doubts!
What to do:
- Hand all the documents required to the person-in-charge.
- Inform them of the date of marriage (normally two or three weeks from the moment you registered.)
Make your way down to any of the National Registration Department (NRD) branches with your fiance/fiancee to register your marriage.
What to prepare:
- Official form that you got in Step 1
- Everyone’s ICs (Yours, your fiance/fiancee, 2 witnesses from both sides)
- You and your fiance/fiancee’s passport-size photographs
What to do:
- You, your fiance/fiancee and a witness from both parties will head into the NRD
- Queue up
- Get married
- Pay RM30
FOR NON-MALAYSIANS
Make your way down to any of the National Registration Department (NRD) branches with your fiance/fiancee to register your marriage.
What to prepare:
- Your Passport
- Check out the detailed document checklist of the Marital Status by the National Registration Department (NRD) for you!
What to do:
- Get an official “Single Status Declaration”
- Fill in the “Single Status Declaration”
- Sign the declaration in front of a Commissioner of Oath
Note: If the document that you received is already in English, then you are good to go. However, if it is in a foreign language (not in English or Malay) then you will need to have it officially translated. In some embassies, you are able to do it there on the spot. However, if the embassy you’re in doesn’t provide this service, then you will have to go to a Commissioner of Oath, which are widely dispersed throughout Malaysia.
STEP 2: Go to your High Commission
As a non-Malaysian, you will have to apply for a letter verifying marital status from your government.
What to prepare:
- Your passports (prepared both original and photocopied versions to be safe)
- Single Status Declaration(s)
What to do:
- Hand your “Single Status Declaration” and passport(s) to the person-in-charge
- Make a payment for the letter (please refer to your embassy for the exact price)
STEP 3: Head on to The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia
Once you and your fiance/fiancee have gotten the Single Status Declaration and the marriage letter, both of you will then have to make your way to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, which is located in Putrajaya.
What to prepare:
- Your passports (original and photocopied versions, just in case you’re asked for it)
- Marriage letter that you got in Step 2
What to do:
- Go to their notarial service counter
- Ask them to endorse your marriage letter
STEP 4: Prepare to Register for Your Marriage
The next step would be to actually register your marriage!
What to prepare:
- Completed official National Registration Department (NRD) document: JPN KC02 (*online version served only as a reference)
- Check out this checklist for marriage registration provided by the NRD and prepare all the documents on it
What to do:
- Get an official “Single Status Declaration”
- Fill in the “Single Status Declaration”
- Sign the declaration in front of a Commissioner of Oath
STEP 5: Go to the National Registration Department (NRD) Branches
Remember to stay in the marriage district for at least a period of 7 days before applying for the Registration of Marriage. If you’ve done so, then it’s time to register!
In order for you to register your marriage, you will have to visit one of the official National Registration Department (NRD) branches.
What to prepare:
- ALL DOCUMENTS in Step 4
What to do:
- Hand all the documents required to the person-in-charge.
- Inform them of the date of marriage (normally two or three weeks from the moment you registered)
Note: Keep in mind that you will need 2 witnesses to appear on the actual marriage date. The witnesses can be either local or a foreigner, and must be at least 21 years of age.
STEP 6: Official Wedding Day
Please wake up as early as you can as the counters close at 11am! Then queue up to get married!
What to prepare:
- Official form that you got in Step 5
- Everyone’s ICs and/or passports (Yours, your fiance/fiancee, 2 witnesses from both sides)
What to do:
- You, your fiance/fiancee, and a witness from both parties will head into the NRD
- Queue up
- Get married!
- Pay RM 30
